Swart Tobie Trail

Our tip: watch the incoming tides as there are sections where you may be trapped by water, and low tide walking is a lot easier on the legs
This fairly new hike takes you along a virtually unexplored stretch of the West Coast close to the farming community of Koekenaap. The wilderness trail is named after the red beak oystercatcher, also known as the Swart Tobie.
Strandfontein
Strandfontein is a stunning little seaside village situated near the Olifants Estuary on the West Coast of South Africa, about 300km from Cape Town. It is nestled between Doringbaai and Papendorp and is about 30km from Lutzville, which is slightly further north.
Doring Bay
The town was only established in 1925 when a crayfish-packing factory was built.
Doring Bay hosts an attractive Lighthouse, completed in 1963. The lighthouse was replaced in 1993 with a concrete structure after being damaged in a storm. It is, however, not manned and not open to the public.
The crayfish factory closed down in the 1970’s and the premises is now used for abalone farming. . You won’t find a restaurant or Wine Cellar closer to the ocean than Fryer’s Cove, a community-run Restaurant, Wine Cellar and Tasting Venue.
This solitary stretch of coastline also has a hiking trail along the beach between Doring Bay and Strandfontein and nearby Bamboesbaai is known for its good surfing conditions.
